In a primary poll of fleet decision-makers, British Petroleum (BP) indicated that 52% of them now have electric vehicles in their fleet. Of those that don’t, 54% of decision-makers said they want to start converting to EVs over the next five years (BP, 2021). In India, food delivery giant Zomato and e-commerce leader Flipkart pledged to convert their fleets to EVs by 2030. Adoption of EVs would not only benefit the country’s economy but will also contribute to India’s goal of net zero emissions by 2070. The Government of India has set ambitious plans for EV adoption, targeting 30% of private cars, 70% of commercial vehicles, and 80% of two and three-wheelers to go electric by 2030.

Charging Infrastructure

India will need over 400,000 public charging stations to achieve its EV target by 2026.   • Purchase Incentives: A direct discount on the cost of the electric vehicle is granted to the user
  • Coupons: A financial incentive in which the money is reimbursed later
  • Interest Subventions: A discount on the interest rate granted while obtaining a loan.
  • Road tax exemption: Road tax at the time of purchase is waived off
  • Registration fee exemption: The one-time registration fee applicable on new vehicle purchases is waived off
  • Income tax benefit: Provided as a deduction on the tax amount payable by an individual to the government
  • Scrapping incentives: Provided upon de-registering old Petrol and Diesel Vehicles
  • Others: Incentives such as interest-free loans, top-up subsidies, special incentives on electric three-wheelers, etc. can also be availed

The EV industry’s perspective for the future

India’s ambitious EV target hinges on green charging infrastructure. While the vision is clear, scaling up presents significant challenges: Integration of solar electricity still comes with a significant upfront cost. The deployment of smart grid-connected charging stations needs to be improved due to technological limitations. Resolving interoperability problems and standards deficiencies is also necessary. However, viable alternatives are beginning to emerge; new business models, the integration of digital payments, battery swapping, and the use of less expensive batteries can increase the viability and affordability of green charging infrastructure.
